The Art of the Student Portrait
Photo shoot Management
Google Headquarters, New York
What’s the key to successful photo shoot management? Preparation.
That includes preparing for and working around events and conditions that don’t go according to plan. We spent weeks getting clearance to shoot a student portrait at Google headquarters in New York. With just a week to go we learned that we could not show up and scout their sprawling Manhattan headquarters in advance. And – we would have just one hour to shoot.
With one fretting photographer, three bags of equipment, an overzealous PR handler and our nervous student in tow, I quickly dashed in and out of offices (cool but generic), dazzling public spaces (too many people), and terraces (killer views but way too bright) until I found this huge blackboard covered in doodles by one of Google’s engineers. Bingo! One hour later and our portrait was done.
Planning is critical, but improvising may be even more so.
